DISCLAIMER: everyone's skin is different. My opinions are just that; they are not cold, hard facts. What works for me may not work for you and vice versa, but I write these reviews to give you a detailed perspective before you go around spending your money everywhere.
It's no news that custom formulations have taken over the beauty industry in a whirlwind of excitement and satisfaction. This includes skincare, haircare, and body care. One specific company is deemed one of the first and most popular brands for custom-formulated serums, one for which I have been getting ads across all social media platforms for years. I never considered buying it because I was satisfied with my skin condition while using my Clinique products. Still, I always recommend it to people with acne and other issues, and they always notice an improvement. Unfortunately, during the lockdown this year, I ran out of products and wanted to save money when buying new ones. I generally wait for the gift with purchase in October, but it was only in August when I desperately needed more skincare. My brother had just bought
Curology by my recommendation, so I decided to try it, if not just for the $5 trial.
I took the simple but detailed quiz online and waited patiently for my assigned dermatologist, Molly, to curate my unique formula. To tell you the truth, although I had complete faith in the science and technology of the brand, I didn't think I would see much of a difference in my skin because Clinique indeed did a fantastic job at keeping my skin smooth, bright, and moisturized along with the help of serums and oils from a few other brands. I haven't suffered from acne in years, so I didn't think there was any room for improvement. Boy, was I wrong? The sample lasted me two months because I only washed my face at night, and all I needed was a pea-sized amount of everything. A little went a long way.
The first time I used it, I felt as if I wasn't applying anything to my face because their products had no scent. I never use fragranced skincare anyway, but there is always some type of smell in the product from the formulations and/or ingredients. I could lather up the gentle cleanser a little while using my Nu Skin ageLOC® LumiSpa® Essential. I had bought that for almost $200 and instantly regretted it, but over time, I came to love it because I realized it was gentle enough but also practical. There will be a post about that soon, so stay tuned! I continued by spritzing my homemade rosewater on my face, followed by the serum, which felt quite moisturizing with only one pump. I would then finish up by applying a large dot of moisturizer. I'm not stingy with skincare, especially not with moisturizers, but the formula was so rich that I didn't need much product.
During the first two weeks, I didn't notice much difference except that my skin felt really clean and bright, which might've just been from when I washed my face every night. As the weeks passed, I realized I had gone almost a month without using an extraction tool on my nose or exfoliating! I didn't even apply any facemasks! That was unprecedented. All the whiteheads on my nose had disappeared, and even the rest of my face had no more clogged pores. My cheeks still had a lot of texture, but continued use would have helped that, too. I had always thought that whiteheads and clogged pores were expected due to the build-up of dirt and dead skin. Exfoliation was a necessary part of the equation to regularly counteract that, which is why I had previously assumed that my skin was delicate. But what using Curology taught me was that if you explicitly target the issues your skin has, your pores won't get clogged, and you won't need to exfoliate. That doesn't mean it's not beneficial, but your skin will naturally get exfoliated through the right ingredients targeted to your skin's concerns.
Because I am a HUGE skincare junkie, I did find myself getting bored throughout the two months of only using those three products plus my rosewater toner. In two months, I hadn't exfoliated, deep-cleaned, or even used a single face mask! And I know that's petty of me to want to use more stuff and indulge in scents and things like that, but I definitely got over it quickly. The primary benefit I found from such a short routine is that I diligently washed my face every night. The only extra step I added to my way occasionally was the FAB Pharma Arnica Rescue and Relief Mask I had gotten from IPSY. And that was only when I was experiencing a little bit of dryness or sensitivity from the sun, redness from my handheld IPL machine, or things like that.
Overall, I was satisfied with my custom formula and am convinced that continued use would have solved all the other issues. Because of the price of $30 a month and my job of trying out new products so that you don't have to, I might not buy the cleanser and moisturizer, but I will definitely buy the custom formula shortly. In all honesty, though, $30 per shipment is a fair price, and I, for one, take much longer to go through products than the company usually says they'll last. The trial lasted me two months, so the full-size would likely last me three or four months. For those debating whether or not you should invest in this, you have nothing to lose. The products are so gentle that even the most sensitive skin will be unharmed by them, and paying $4.95 shipping will barely put a dent in your wallet compared to other less effective companies.
